What is a Cliché?

A cliché is a stereotype, or over simplified, expression that's become commonplace through overuse. It's a phrase you've likely heard over-and-over again.

The word originated from the French language. It once referred to the clicking of cast iron plates used in a printing press to reproduce words, phrases, or images called stereotypes.

Over time, the word cliché represented words or phrases repeated often. Clichés are regularly overused and considered unoriginal.
