5 Pi Facts for March 14th

Pi is irrational!

In honor of Pi Day on March 14th, let us take a look at three facts about pi.

1. Pi is...


Pi is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. No matter what size a circle is, the ratio will always equal pi. Pi is approximately 3.14. As an irrational number, pi does not have an end nor does it become repetitive.


2. Significance of March 14th


Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th, or 3/14, because the date numerically represents the first three digits of pi.


3. Founded in 1988


Physicist Larry Shaw first celebrated Pi Day in 1988 at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, California. It is celebrated annually on March 14th. Pi Day became a national holiday in 2009.


4. A Greek Origin


Ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes of Syracuse during the third century B.C. is credited for creating an algorithm that led to the measurement of circle which observed that an average value of 3.14... related to the area of a circle to its radius.


5. Greek Letter Representation


The lower-case Greek letter for p (π) was first used in 1736 when mathematician Leonhard Euler established the definition of pi as half the circumference of a circle whose radius is equal to one, or 3.14....
