A Dream of a Stormy Situation

Just a story about escaping a bad storm with my Dad and pets.

Sometimes I have weird dreams, especially when I go to sleep feeling exhausted. I thought I would share my recent dream of a stormy situation.

In case it's helpful, below are the main points covered in this post:

A Stormy Night

My Dad was watching the nighttime weather forecast on the local news. As he paid close attention to the radar map onscreen, I took my dogs out to the backyard.

My large dog, Lucy, started barking at the back gate. I walked over to the gate to see what Lucy barked out. I almost missed it, but eventually saw the wide eyes of a tiny gray kitten.

The barking frightened the kitten, so I grabbed Lucy's collar and lured her to another part of the backyard. My small dog, Rascal, walked over to the gate. The kitten squeezed through a gap in the fence and stood by Rascal's side. Rascal, the kitten, and I headed back indoors. Lucy remained outside a little while longer.

Dad had a shocked look on his face upon seeing the kitten. However, he stressed the urgent need to "leave now." I was taken aback but followed his demand. Dad was (in reality) a meteorologist with the US Air Force for over twenty years, so I never doubted his knowledge of weather-related threats.

Dad headed to the backyard to get Lucy while I carried and placed Rascal and the kitten into the SUV. Lucy jumped in with something in her mouth. I wanted to pry her mouth open, but Dad said we did not have time. I briefly saw a rodent's head before closing the SUV door.

Reuniting with My First Dog

Lucy and I walked past my Dad, Rascal, and the kitten sitting on the couch watching the weather report. We started a walk around the hotel property while Lucy gently carried a hamster in her mouth.

We stopped periodically so she could place the hamster down for a breather. The hamster never wandered far from Lucy. It seemed unbothered by how Lucy carried it in her mouth.

Although my pets seemed happy, I felt confused and saddened. I now had a kitten and hamster to care for with no knowledge of how to care for them properly. Heck. I struggle to believe I am a good dog owner to Rascal and Lucy. I did not feel capable of providing my pets with the care they deserved, especially not after leaving everything behind.

A car pulled into a parking spot by my SUV. Lucy, with the hamster in her mouth, and I walked over to greet the driver. A woman apologized before informing me that everything was gone. I felt devastated. I lost the first house I bought on my own. I lost everything.

The woman said there was one thing she found in the rubble that went unbroken. She opened the back hatch of her car to reveal the urn of my first dog, Shadow. I held his heavy urn in my arms and began sobbing.

I hugged the woman and thanked her. Everyone important to me were unharmed and I had Shadow's ashes in my arms. Life was good.

My Thoughts

Overall, it was a good dream. While I love my house and have some items of sentimental value, they are replaceable. My loved ones are not.

The kitten and hamster surprised me. I have never (that I recall) dreamt of having a kitten or hamster. I usually dream of having one or two additional dogs. I am curious to see if a kitten or hamster will appear in a future dream.

What's Next?

In case any part of my dream becomes reality, I will start researching cat and hamster (or small rodent) care. I want to be prepared in case life bypasses my wish for a two-dog household and sends other pets my way.
