Using Posca paint markers to draw Oogie Boogie and Darkwing Duck.
I'll admit it. I'm obsessed with customizing my own stuff. Posca paint markers make it easy for me to do so. I've used Poscas to customize several external hard drives, carrying cases, and a portable photo printer. More recently, I used it to customize my laptop sleeve.
Choosing the Designs
I originally planned to use my Cricut Maker to cut out a silhouette of Mr. Oogie Boogie Man to iron onto one side of the laptop sleeve. The silhouette is of this gamblin' man in front of, or perhaps within the moon.
However, I remembered last year I attempted to iron a silhouette of Oogie Boogie on a t-shirt. I used a Cricut brand white iron-on. My old iron doesn't get very hot and auto-shuts off when it gets to a certain high temperature. Therefore, much of the iron-on peeled off after I threw the t-shirt in the washing machine.
Since my Switch Lite carrying case design is still in great condition, even without applying a protective coat over it, I decided to recreate the silhouette on my laptop sleeve with Posca paint markers.
After completing the Oogie Boogie design, I started wondering why the silhouette was familiar. I finally remembered Darkwing Duck roaming at night, like Batman, and I did an image search for "Darkwing Duck silhouette."
I found a silhouette of the duck who likes to get dangerous in front of the moon. I wanted to recreate this silhouette on the flip side of the laptop sleeve to compliment Oogie Boogie's silhouette.
Creating the Designs
I started by using a lint roller to clean the surface. I created the moon's circular shape by tracing with a white colored pencil around a spackling container. I used the same white colored pencil to make a rough sketch of Oogie Boogie's silhouette design.
I used a white colored pencil because I don't remember where my white charcoal pencil was. I'm not sure if charcoal would've been a better option, but I imagine it would've shown on the black surface better than the colored pencil.
As was the case when I shared My Thoughts on Uni Posca, applying the Posca paint markers over the fabric was easy. However, each color used required multiple applications to achieve a somewhat vibrant color to contrast the black surface.
After completing Oogie Boogie's design, which I did first, I let the design dry overnight before starting Darkwing Duck's design on the flip side of the laptop sleeve. I then left the laptop sleeve and designs alone to dry for 24 hours before handling.
When I used the white Posca paint marker, specks of white fell onto the surface. Fortunately, it brushed off easily with my hand or lint roller and didn't stick to the surface. I assume paint dried on the plastic shell housing the nib. I'm going to try to make a habit of wiping the shell to remove any excess paint that may get on it.
It took each application or coat about 30 minutes to an hour to dry before I could apply another coat. I frequently needed to shake and re-prime the markers as I used them, especially the yellow marker.
I applied 2 coats of white for the eyes, 3-4 coats of yellow for the moon, 1 coat of black for masking the pencil markings and mistakes I made, and 1 coat of purple for Darkwing Duck's cape.
My Thoughts
I love these designs! Drawing silhouettes opposed to full color characters was easy for me, probably because there were less details I needed to focus on adding.
I may return to these designs later to add a quote on each side. Oogie Boogie is known to say "I am the shadow on the moon at night..." Darkwing Duck says "I am the terror that flaps in the night..."
It seems like the 2 characters could get along well based on their sayings.
Unfortunately, I don't know how to protect my artwork. I know Posca will come off if I attempted to wash the laptop sleeve. I thought about using Mod Podge, but I'm not sure that's the best solution.
When I figure out what to do, I'll do the same for the small carrying case I've customized for my Switch Lite. Fortunately, that case isn't dirty and not in need of washing.
What's Next?
I still don't know what to use to protect my designs, but fortunately I'm not going anywhere soon to risk getting the laptop sleeve dirty.
