It's a good day to tell your mail carrier "hello and thanks."
October 9th, 2020 recognizes postal services and workers worldwide. This day is celebrated in many countries. The best way to celebrate is to simply tell your mail carrier "hello and thank you for your service." In fact, why not say it with a handmade card?
History
World Post Day is not a holiday, but rather a day of worldwide recognition of the postal services' contributions to global communication.
The General Postal Union, now known as the Universal Postal Union (UPU), was established in Bern, the capital city of Switzerland, in 1874. During a conference on October 9, 1874, several countries signed the Treaty of Bern to set postal policies that allowed mail to be delivered worldwide.
In 1948, the UPU became an agency of the United Nations. Over the years, postal services and members worldwide worked together to create and improve a universal network of global communication and trade.
In 1969, the UPU Congress declared World Post Day during a conference held in Tokyo, Japan. World Post Day is held on October 9th each year in commemoration of the Treaty of Bern and establishment of the UPU.
There are currently 192 countries, including the United States of America, that are members of this international organization.
How to Celebrate the Day
The best way I can think to celebrate World Postal Day is to tell your mail carrier "hello and thank you for your service." A simple sentiment may warm a mail carrier's heart, especially during the challenges 2020 presented everybody worldwide.
Personally, I handmade a simple greeting card for my mail carrier. I do this often throughout the year, and Friday won't be any different. I haven't met her in-person, but we've communicated briefly through short notes left in the mailbox.
She's informed me that the greeting cards I make for her bring a smile to her face, especially because I always sign them with my dogs' names. It makes me feel good to know a little act of kindness, even when I think my handmade cards are corny, brings a bit of joy to someone many others often take for granted.
Consider celebrating World Post Day by sending a short note to your mail carrier, family members, or friends.
If you made some blank notecards last week for Card Making Day, maybe Friday is a good day to send one out to someone.
My Thoughts
An act of kindness, even one as simple as a mere "hello" or "thank you," goes a long way. As a shy introvert who's a bit awkward in most social situations, a short note on paper allows me to say something I probably wouldn't say aloud.
What's Next?
I've kept myself busy making Halloween-themed crafts. Many crafting attempts failed, but a few succeeded. Check back next week to see if I post a Halloween craft that you're interested in. Also check-out my YouTube channel to see the few Halloween cards and polymer clay charms I've uploaded.
