I Love to Write Day is celebrated annually on November 15th. It is a great opportunity to put pen to paper and document whatever is on your mind.

In case it's helpful, below are the topics covered in this post:

About This Day

John Riddle founded I Love to Write Day in 2002. Riddle told a USA Today reporter that his goal for this day of celebration was to encourage people to "spend time writing."

Why spend time writing? Below are just a few benefits to writing by hand or digitally:

Creative expression

  • Thought clarity.

  • Self-reflection.

  • Stress-relief.

  • Learning retention.

There are many benefits to writing. Check out the links below to learn more from the experts:

How to Celebrate

The best way to celebrate I Love Writing Day is to write something. Dedicate at least a couple minutes to putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard and start writing anything.

Consider writing...

  • a to-do list to complete today, tomorrow, or whenever.

  • a list of affirmations to identify the positives in your life.

  • a short letter to yourself or another person (thank you, miss you, love you, etc.).

  • a new or updated bio for your social media account(s).

  • a poem.

  • a short story.

  • a profile story for an adoptable pet that does not yet have a story posted online.

  • a business plan or proposal if you considered starting your own business.

  • about a memory worth documenting.

  • that book or novel you put on hold or have not started before today (this one is more of a note to myself).

I could keep going, but I believe you got the gist of what you can write about.

How I Celebrate Weekly

Although I do not consider myself a skilled writer, I love writing for fun.

Below are ways that I write weekly:

  • this personal blog website for personal entertainment and stress-relief.

  • daily affirmation identifying at least one good thing about that day.

  • journal/diary to document my thoughts, feelings, and memories.

  • sentiment messages for card making.

  • texts to friends and family members so that they know I am thinking of and care about them.

  • ideas for future blog and video projects ("brainstorming" pages in my bullet journal).

  • notes about things I am learning about.

  • wish lists, grocery shopping lists, to-do lists, packing lists for that imaginary vacation I do not plan to go on anytime soon, and other list types (I like lists).

The thing I love most about writing is getting things off my chest. Depending on what I am writing about, the process may be fun or challenging.

For example, I love writing wish lists as much as I like to daydream about what I could have, what I could do, or places I could visit. I enjoy it as much as a child enjoys writing a wish list to Santa Claus.

I hate writing about negative memories about my past, but I know I should not keep all that negativity bottled up within me. Sometimes I need to vent. I especially get embarrassed writing about it publicaly, but I do so because someone out there may find it relatable or entertaining.

In the end, my mind feels a tad bit at ease after I wrote something privately in my journal/diary or publicly through this blog website.

What's Next?

If you have a minute or two to spare, consider dedicating that time to writing about something. Anything. Write whatever comes to mind!
