July is World Watercolor Month. This month is a good excuse to express your creativity using watercolor paints!

In case it's helpful, below are the topics covered in this post:

About This Month

World Watercolor Month was founded in 2016 by the creator of Doodlewash®, Charlie O'Shields. What started as art challenges led to an annual global celebration of the painting medium.

O'Shields and his "crew" raise awareness of the importance for art education. Art education helps learners develop original ideas, problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, and self-confidence. It also teaches learners how to handle constructive criticism while giving them a creative outlet for managing their emotions.

There are even more benefits to art education. You can check out the American Academy of Arts & Sciences publication about The Values of Arts Education. You can also do a search for the "importance of art education" to learn more about the benefits it offers learners.

How to Celebrate

Devote some time to express your creativity using watercolor paints! This month is a good excuse to express your creativity through this medium. Remember to have fun!

If you have not used watercolor before, use this month as an excuse to give it a try! You can buy a watercolor paint set (watercolor paints, paintbrush, and paper) to start off with. If there is a sales event going on (like Prime Days via Amazon.com), you may be able to find a beginner set at a discount.

Check out the Doodlewash® official prompt list if you want ideas on what to paint. The list is updated monthly and ready for your creative interpretation!

Lastly, you can celebrate World Watercolor Month by learning more about the medium. You could:

  • Browse paintings created by other artists for inspiration.

  • Visit an art museum to appreciate the paintings on display.

  • Read a book or blog post about your favorite painters.

  • Listen to an audiobook or podcast reviewing art supplies.

  • Watch online tutorials and tip videos.

What's Next?

Celebrate World Watercolor Month by making your own watercolor paintings! Personally, I will watch some watercolor tutorials to learn new techniques to later try out in my own sketchbook.
