LYWHL Screen Protector on S20+

Updated: Jan 12, 2021

Installing the tempered glass screen protector with installation frame.

I got a new LYWHL tempered glass screen protector for my Samsung Galaxy S20+ phone. Because my previous Nano Optics protector was for the wrong phone model and didn't fit the screen properly, it started lifting around the edges after a few months. It was time to replace it with something better.

In case it's helpful, below are the topics I cover in this post:

  • LYWHL Package ("cautions" and package contents)

  • Preparation

  • Screen Protector Installation

  • Some Tips

  • My Thoughts

If you've read my Nano Optics on S20+ blog post, please note that I didn't include a "Detailed Steps in a Numbered List" in this post because the product company's video and written instructions are clear and well-illustrated.

The items were packaged neatly in a molded plastic case. I mention this because it means the items were packaged with care, not just dropped into a cardboard box like the Nano Optics product I tried months ago.

Preparation

I reviewed the guide provided in the product's package. I was happy it came with more than four illustrated steps! The printed guide was illustrated well and informative. The link to the YouTube video on how to install it was welcomed.

The printed guide and video instructions were clear and detailed. I did find it helpful to watch the video first and refer to the printed guide as I went through the steps to setup and install the tempered glass screen protector.

However, the video the QR code redirected me to was for a Note 20 Ultra. I was concerned about discrepancies with the differences in phone models. I still watched the full video and later found that the steps were applicable with my S20+.

In case you're interested, the current installation video is available via YouTube titled [LYWHL]♥Installation for UV Glass Screen Protector(Note 20 Ultra).

As was recommended by the printed guide and video, I set everything I knew I'd need on the tabletop. I also peeled off the old Nano Optics tempered glass screen protector. It didn't take much effort to pop it off the phone's screen. It didn't leave any residue. The screen was clean and free of dust particles. The old screen cracked when it popped off. I threw it away and proceeded with the installation.

Screen Protector Installation

I started by sticking the non-slip mat on the back of the phone. This mat allows the phone to sit flat on the tabletop without it rocking from the camera lens.

I wiped the phone's screen with a microfiber cloth and then with a wet wipe. When the screen dried, I used the large dust absorber sticker to remove dust particles, lint, dog hair, and whatever else tried to ruin the installation.

The installation frame snapped over the phone tightly. I made sure the short end of the installation frame with the level was snapping over the bottom end of the phone. The video clearly stated this, and it's labeled well on the installation frame as well.

I worked on top of a DIY dropleaf tabletop that wasn't level. The two levels on the installation frame helped me identify where I needed to lift a corner. I folded the opened wet wipe wrapper and placed it under a corner until the bubbles within both levels were centered within the lines.

I also wanted to make sure the installation frame didn't tilt or wobble if I accidentally applied pressure to another corner. I checked to see where a foot of the installation frame didn't touch the tabletop, folded the used wet wipe, and slid it under the gap to keep everything steady and level.

I slid the absorption pads into the appropriately sized slots on the sides of the installation frame. This would've been nice to have when I installed the old Nano Optics tempered glass screen protector months ago.

The guide said to loosen the black cap on one end of the UV glue tube slightly. It then stated to "twist the cap of the dropper tip three times to remove it." Twisting the black cap slightly was easy, but I twisted the cap, which was orange in my case, three times to remove it. Nothing happened. I ended up pulling that orange cap off. Fortunately, nothing splashed or spilled out.

I held the UV glue tube, uncapped part facing down, directly over the center of the phone's screen. I completely untwisted and removed the black cap from the opposite end of the UV glue tube. I let the UV glue flow over the center of the phone's screen until it stopped dripping.

I peeled the film off the screen protector, and then I gently placed one end of the peeled side of the screen protector over my phone's screen closest to the "bottom" of the installation frame. I then dropped it and used my finger to make sure the screen protector was within the inner edges of the installation frame.

Once I verified the screen protector was withing the inner edges of the installation frame, I pulled the tab slowly and watched as the screen protector fell in place. I watched as the UV glue spread and completely filled the underside of the screen protector. It took less than a minute for the glue to spread.

Before I could use the UV light to cure the UV glue, I had to find a USB-C cable with a "tongue" (the case that the USB pin sticks out of) thin enough to fit in the designated cable port of the UV light. I thought I could use my Nintendo and Samsung USB-C cables, but the tongues were too wide and wouldn't allow me to input the pin of the USB-C cable completely.

Fortunately, I found a USB-C cable with a thin, metal tongue that allowed me to input the pin of the cable into the UV light completely. The UV light is pre-set with a 45 second timer. I pressed the button on the same side as the USB-C port and slowly ran it over the phone and installation frame until the lights went out.

After the lights went out, I popped off the installation frame and ran the UV light over the phone for another 45 seconds, or until the lights went out.

I turned on my phone and tried to use the fingerprint sensor with no luck. I recalled the video suggested running the UV light over the phone a third time if the fingerprint sensor didn't work. It was possible the UV glue wasn't fully cured. I ran the UV light over the phone one last time and successfully used the fingerprint sensor to unlock my phone.

Some Tips

Below are some tips I learned from my own experience:

  • Turn off your phone to keep from getting distracted with the screen coming on randomly.

  • Use the dust absorber stickers after attaching the installation frame onto the phone to grab any new dust speckles.

  • Fold and use the opened wet wipe wrapper and used wet wipe to balance the installation frame if your tabletop isn't flat or level.

  • If you use something to balance the installation frame, gently press the sides and corners to make sure it doesn't wobble. You want the frame balanced and steady to keep the installation frame from tilting even slightly and the UV glue from flowing towards the edge before placing the screen protector.

  • After removing the installation frame, run the UV light over the phone a couple times to ensure the UV glue solidified. It won't hurt anything to make certain the screen protector's on securely.

  • If the fingerprint sensor doesn't read correctly, there's possibly some uncured (not completely solidified) UV glue under the screen protector. Run the UV light over the phone again to ensure the UV glue solidified.

  • Save the non-slip mat! You'll need it for the second screen protector when you need to use it. It'll be helpful to ensure the phone is level and balanced prior to applying the UV glue.

  • Store the accessories for the second screen protector in a bag or envelope if you don't want to save the large box.

My Thoughts

Wow!

The tempered glass screen protector included with this kit doesn't seem different than the tempered glass screen protector included with the Nano Optics kit I previously tried.

The printed installation guide and video instructions were clear and detailed. I found the video most helpful as it demonstrated how I should complete each step. I'm grateful the video was available, even though the video I viewed was for a different phone model.

The installation frame was the best part of the kit. The issues I encountered or worried about with the Nano Optics kit I tried previously were addressed with the installation frame. It made it quicker and easier for me to install the tempered glass screen protector.

I have no complaints with this kit.
