Did you know that March 23rd is National Puppy Day? Today is a great day for dog lovers everywhere to give a puppy lots of love.

In case it's helpful, below are the topics covered in this post:

About This Day

National Puppy Day was established in 2006 by Colleen Paige. Colleen also founded other pet-focused holidays including:

  • National Mutt Day (July 31st)

  • National Dog Day (August 26th)

  • National Black Dog Day (October 1st)

  • National Cat Day (October 29th)

National Puppy Day encourages dog lovers to show their appreciation, love, and affection to their canine friends.

This day also encourages dog lovers to consider adopting or supporting adoptable puppies in need of loving homes.

According to the Shelter Animals Count Intake and Outcome Database (IOD) Data Summary for 2023, nearly 159,000 dogs entered shelters and humane societies nationwide as of mid-March 2023.

It is possible that the intake number could rise into the millions by the end of the year based on the annual trends. The ASPCA in their Pet Statistics article stated that approximately 3.1 million dogs entered shelters and humane societies in 2019.

This day brings awareness to the many adoptable puppies in need of loving homes. People should also be aware that there are many shelters and humane societies in need of support to continue their care of puppies until they are adopted.

How to Celebrate

The best way to celebrate National Puppy Day is to spend quality time with your canine companions. Smother your puppy, young and old, with lots of love and attention! I will spend quality time with my new puppy, Lucy (three-months-old) and "old puppy," Rascal (seven-years-old).

If you want a canine companion to join your household, visit your local animal shelter or humane society to adopt the perfect puppy to match your lifestyle.

Consider fostering if you are unsure whether or not you are ready to adopt. Doing so will give you an opportunity to make your decision about adopting. It will also free up space for another homeless animal to enter your local shelter or humane society.

If you are not looking to adopt or foster, you can make a donation. Check with your local shelter or humane society to see how you can show your support. Many accept monetary donations, food, toys, volunteer time, and more.

What's Next?

If you cannot adopt, foster, or donate, you can celebrate National Puppy Day by appreciating photos and videos of puppies. Relieve some stress by enjoying the sights of small fluff-balls!
