Just a story of an odd dream of my dogs at a car dealership.
I previously shared three things that always existed in-dream When I Dream of My Dogs. A recent dream at a car dealership with my dogs broke two of the three things that used to exist for years.
In case it's helpful, below are the topics covered in this post:
Three Things That Used to Always Exist In-Dream
To sum up my previous blog post about When I Dream of My Dogs, there were three things I previously claimed always existed when I dreamt of my two dogs:
We Were Always on Vacation
My Dogs Were Always Off-Leash
There Were Three Dogs
I never researched what these different aspects of my dreams meant. I accepted it as a norm since they have existed in-dream for many years.
A few nights ago, however, I had a dream that broke two of the three things mentioned above.
For the first time in years, I did not dream of being away on vacation with my dogs. I also only had my two dogs in this dream. So much for "always" dreaming of owning three dogs while on vacation.
My Dream at a Car Dealership
My dogs and I were at a car dealership. The car dealership was hosting a puppy adoption event on the lot. Buyers had their pick of a puppy at no cost with the purchase of a new car. I do not recall how many puppies were at the event. Let us pretend there were a dozen adoptable puppies at the event.
We were outside standing next to the new SUV I just finalized the purchase of. I recall feeling excited about my new ride. I was also anxious to transfer my belongings from my traded car into my new SUV.
I was informed that I could take a puppy home for free as part of the adoption event. I looked at my large senior dog, Shadow, and told him to "go pick a puppy you want to take home with us." Shadow and my small dog, Rascal, walked off towards the fenced area where the puppies were.
The salesperson and I were transferring my personal belongings. All doors on both vehicles were opened to make the transfer quick and convenient. We overheard someone yell, "Just one! Just one puppy!"
There were others talking and yelling, but I could not make out what they were saying. I laughed as the salesperson walked away to see what was going on while I continued what I was doing. Who was crazy enough to try to take more than one puppy?
The salesperson returned to let me know that my dogs were trying to take all the puppies. I walked around the vehicles to see Shadow, Rascal, and a dozen puppies walking towards the new SUV. Shadow was herding the puppies towards the SUV while Rascal barked at anyone who attempted to reach for the puppies.
I recall yelling at Shadow, "No! We cannot take them all," as he was encouraging the puppies to jump into the back of the SUV. The car salesperson was laughing, but other people were visibly frustrated because of Rascal's protective behavior.
Several puppies made it into the back of the SUV before I woke up.
Not Far From Reality
While the dream was a bit absurd, it reflected five things that has happened in real life.
#1: I have been researching hybrid SUVs for grins recently. I am not in a position where I can get a new vehicle, but I was interested to research what is available on the car market. Consider it a daydream. I love my car, but a part of me misses owning a more spacious SUV.
#2: There is a car dealership in my state that hosts a pet adoption event annually. I receive emails annually with dates for the pet adoption event they offer. Perhaps I thought about this in the waking world before I went to sleep.
#3: I always took my dogs car shopping. Rascal only experienced it once when I purchased my current car. However, Shadow joined me on car shopping adventures several times years ago. Several of the dealerships we visited regularly had bowls of water set out and treats available for dogs who shopped with their owners.
#4: My dogs once attempted to smuggle a small Yorkie into my car without me knowing it. The Yorkie got away from its owner and hid under Shadow as we walked to the car. When the owner came to get the Yorkie, Rascal barked at the owner making it challenging for the owner to get her dog. The owner and I laughed about what happened while both my dogs whined until we left.
#5: Sometimes my neighbor's two dogs escape their yard and wander freely in the alley behind my house. If the neighbor's dogs are out, Shadow, who does walk off-leash with my Dad in the neighborhood, tries to herd the German Sheppard puppy to our house. The two get along very well. The neighbor's other dog does not care to interact with my dogs.
My Thoughts
This dream was reflective of things that have happened in real life. I still consider it a strange dream, but perhaps it is not too far from reality.
I can see my dogs attempting to herd a litter of puppies into my car or house. Shadow has always shown a great deal of interest in puppies. He would play with them, but mostly he would watch them do their own thing. Rascal tends to do whatever Shadow does without question.
What's Next?
I am still debating whether to keep a dream journal/diary. If I ever decided to do so, I will share the setup and my thoughts of maintaining it with you.
