My First Jerry's Artarama Haul

Items I got from an art store during my first visit.

I recently got a few items after my first time visiting a Jerry's Artarama art store. I thought I'd share what I got, why I got it, and how I hope to use it one day.

In case it's helpful, below are the topics covered in this post:

Acrylic Medium

While making several Polymer Clay Pepperoni Pizza charms, I realized I did not have a good matte varnish. I normally prefer a gloss finish, but it is not the best finish for some of my projects.

I noticed this Creative Inspirations Acrylic Medium served as a matte medium and varnish. I have never heard of this brand, nor have I used matte medium. I thought this would be a good product to learn new ways of painting and protecting creative my projects.

pH Adhesive

I came across a book binding section on one side of the store. This adhesive would be perfect to use with a book binding supplies kit I bought during My July 2022 Prime Day Haul.

I want to make my own hardcover watercolor book using the 'coptic stitch' or other sewn method. Of course, I could use Mod Podge (decoupage glue) to seal the book bind as I did with my DIY Travel Books. However, I figured this Lineco Neutral pH Adhesive (PVA glue) was designed for book binding and would work best.

When I eventually get around to my first book binding attempt, I will share my thoughts and experience with you.

Air Dry Clay

Besides Play-Doh from my childhood, I have not used air dry clay. Yet, I know air dry clay like this Creative Paperclay Modeling Material would be great for use with or on creative projects I cannot put into the oven. It will be my go-to when polymer clay is not the best option.

Watercolor Paints

I did not know that my Dad bought me Daniel Smith Extra Fine Watercolors. These are pricey professional-grade watercolor paints.

I am grateful my Dad bought me these paints, but I do not feel like I am skilled or knowledgeable enough to use such professional-grade paints. I consider myself an amateur/novice with lots to learn.

However, Dad knew I watch art supply reviews. Last week, I wanted to learn more about Daniel Smith watercolor paints and my Dad overheard some of the positive comments people online shared.

Now that I am the owner of better-quality paints, I went ahead and used it to create several small paintings. There were three things I noticed immediately while swatching the colors:

  1. The colors are bold and vibrant.

  2. The paint flows smoothly over watercolor paper.

  3. A little amount of paint on a brush covers a lot of area.

I enjoy using these paints better than the many beginner/student-grade paints I own. However, I am not entirely satisfied with the granulation effect once dried. It is not something I am used to.

I am sure with practice I will learn how and when to use these granulated paints. It does not seem like these are good for all paintings, but I still have much to learn about watercolors. For now, I believe it would be best for the background or foreground of a painting like a sky or grassy fields.

My Thoughts

Overall, I am satisfied with the purchases I made. I love trying new supplies and learning new ways of doing something. I just need to make time to focus on creative projects.

I am grateful for the watercolor paints my Dad bought me. He spoils me rotten even though I am an adult. I do not deserve him in my life.

While I am not entirely satisfied with the granulated effects, I enjoy using the paints. I will continue to use these paints and learn how/when to use them.

What's Next?

With Halloween approaching, I decided to do several Halloween-themed creative projects. Check back during October to see what spooky things I have to share!

Have you used any of the products I listed? Comment below to share your thoughts and experience using these products. Did I make a good or bad purchase? Let me know!
