In honor of National Splurge Day on June 18th.
National Splurge Day is dedicated to encouraging people who can afford it to spend a little extra on something they want. I wrote down my summer splurge wish list for my dogs.
In case it's helpful, below are the topics covered in this post:
Above Ground Pool
My Dad told me he wanted to buy my dogs an above ground pool when they were on sale before Memorial Day weekend. I reminded him that I have a small backyard.
Dad said a round ten foot above ground pool would fit "perfectly" in a corner of the backyard. It would leave "just enough" grass for the dogs to take care of business.
Since then, I daydreamed about whether my dogs would enjoy a pool.
My young dog, Lucy, loves playing in water. Last summer, I got her a kiddie pool to splash around in. She would prance in the larger body of water at the dog park.
I imagine Lucy would love playing in a pool large enough for her to swim around. In fact, I noted it as something she would splurge on If Cats and Dogs Went on a Spending Spree.
Rascal, my small dog, has never been in a pool. He used to take weekend trips to the beach, but never touched the water (his choice). I cannot imagine Rascal swimming in the pool, but there are other ways he could enjoy it.
Pool Accessories and Toys
My lazy Rascal may love lounging on an inflatable dog pool float. He spends a lot of time 'sunning' himself in the backyard. I imagine he would not mind doing so on a float, although I may need to help him get used to it over several weeks.
Lucy, the ever-playful pup, would enjoy pool toys. While a variety would be great, I believe she would love water splash balls.
My first dog, Shadow, loved playing with water splash balls only for them to 'explode' on impact. It was a fun way to keep him cool outdoors in the summer. I think the same may be true for Lucy.
I Like Driving My RC Car when I walk at the park sometimes, so I imagine I would also enjoy a RC submarine or shark in the pool. I would not use it when the dogs are in the pool, but it would be fun to have if by some miracle I got the pool to myself.
Pool Steps/Ramp
Dad wondered about how Lucy could get in and out of the pool without our help. Lucy does not mind being carried. However, we do not want to lift or carry an eighty-pound dog so frequently.
At the very least, deep steps (no ladders) could give Lucy the independence to get in and out of an above ground pool without assistance. While there are a few that had steps for getting in and out, it may be cheaper to make DIY steps for Lucy to use independently.
A ramp would be better on Lucy's joints. It would also make it easier for Rascal to get in and out on his own if he wanted.
What's Next?
Since we do not have a pool to take advantage of, my dogs will cool off in other ways this summer. In fact, I have DIY dog popsicles for them in the freezer.
