National Teddy Bear Day in the US is celebrated on September 9th. The day focuses on the beloved stuffed toys for children and adults alike! I thought I would share a little information about this day and some ideas on how to celebrate it.

In case it's helpful, below are the topics covered in this post:

About This Day

Three Small Teddy Bears
Three Small Teddy Bears (The Author's Bears)

The Teddy Bear was named in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt after word got around about how he refused to shoot a bear during a hunting trip. Although Roosevelt, also nicknamed Teddy, was an avid huntsman, he told his hunting party that it was not sportsman like to kill a defenseless bear that they captured and tied for the President.

A reporter wrote a newspaper article about the event. The newspaper article caught the attention of Clifford Berryman who inked a political cartoon depicting Roosevelt's refusal to shoot a bear cup. The cartoon was titled "Drawing the line at the Mississippi" and referred to how the President was handling a dispute between Mississippi and Louisiana.

Morris and Rose Michtom, owners of a small candy shop, wrote a letter to the White House for permission to use Roosevelt's name for a stuffed bear. Once approved, the shop owners created the "Teddy Bear" toy. The toys achieved wide popularity.

How To Celebrate

There are a variety of ways you can celebrate National Teddy Bear Day. For example, why not take a moment to appreciate the teddy bear that made you happy as a child? Give it a hug, take some photos of it, share stories of it, or pass it on to a younger generation to care for and love your teddy bear.

I am fortunate to still have three teddy bears I loved and cared for as a child. My goal for keeping them was to pass them on to my children. As for now, my teddy bears are still loved by me and my dogs.

If you no longer have your childhood teddy bear or want to add to your growing collection, go ahead and buy a teddy bear for a loved one like a child or yourself. Buy a bear to commemorate a special occasion like a birthday or just because you can!

A teddy bear may make a great gift for someone. If you know someone celebrating an event or going through a rough time, a teddy bear may cheer them up.

If you are feeling creative, create teddy bear inspired arts and crafts. Draw, paint, or construct a teddy bear using your favorite art supplies. I recently created a Polymer Clay Bronze Bear to honor this day.
