About This Day

Did you know Pancake Day is associated with Shrove Tuesday, a holy day observed by Christians?

Shrove Tuesday takes place the day before Ash Wednesday each year. It is observed by many Christians, marking the day they should repent their sins before the start of Lent, a season of abstinence.

Lent is a forty-day event of fasting beginning on Ash Wednesday. The forty days does not include Sundays, making Lent last forty-six days before Easter.

In 600 AD, Pope Gregory said Christians should abstain from consuming any animal products beginning on Ash Wednesday and for the duration of Lent. On Shrove Tuesday, Christians traditionally made meals using any and all ingredients that would go unused during Lent.

One such meal that was quick, simple, and tasty to make were pancakes. Known by different names like hotcakes and flapjacks, pancakes became a go-to meal by many Christians. Many would consume many stacks during the day.

Before long, pancakes became a staple for many Christians. Thus, Shrove Tuesday additionally became recognized as Pancake Day.
