Using the Adobe Photoshop Neural Filters available for BETA testing can be done in a few easy steps. The "Colorize" filter immediately caught my attention since I've [poorly] colorized old family photos in the past. This filter is easy to use and produces nice results before adjustments.

What Are Neural Filters in Photoshop?

Adobe Photoshop Neural Filters is a new workspace (available for about a month when this post was made) that contains advanced filters for altering the appearance of an image.

Adobe's website states that Neural Filters "dramatically reduces difficult workflows to just a few clicks." Realistic effects and results that once took much time, skill, and patience to create can now be produced in seconds. Sliders and other features allow adjustments to be made to achieve the preferred results.

The Neural Filters workspace includes the following sections:

  • Featured filters are officially released filters that have been tested and are ready-to-use.

  • BETA filters are work-in-progress filters available for testing, but not yet finalized for official release.

  • Wait List displays a list of filters that may be coming to the Neural Filters workspace.

Through the Wait List, I was able to click on a filter name, view a short description of what it'd do, and let Adobe know which filters "I'm Interested" in with a click of a button.

I've attempted to restore and colorize old black and white family photos with poor results, so I was curious to see how the Colorize filter looked before any adjustments needed to be made.

Using the "Colorize" Filter for the First Time

I first had to download the Colorize filter before I could use it. Fortunately, the six steps to get started are easy (in my opinion, anyway):

1. Open Adobe Photoshop on your device and select the image layer you want to apply a filter to.

2. Choose Image > Mode > RGB Color from the drop-down menu. The Colorize filter won't show if the mode's set to Grayscale.

3. Choose Filter > Neural Filters from the drop-down menu.

4. In the Neural Filters panel, click the download button to download and install the Colorize filter.

After the filter downloads and installs, it'll automatically apply the Colorize filter to the selected image layer.

Once applied, you can click the Preview button to see the before and after versions of the image.

5. You can also adjust the focal point, color balance, and more within the Neural Filters panel.

6. Click the OK button to confirm application of the Colorize filter to the selected image.

A new layer will be added to the Layers panel.

If you deselect the original black and white image, you'll notice that the new layer isn't a complete image. You may consider grouping, merging, or flattening the two layers to preserve the colorized version if preferred.

My Thoughts

NOTE: Video does not have sound.

Barely knowing the basics of Adobe Photoshop, I found the Colorize BETA filter amazing to use! I applied it to several famous black and white photos and have yet to encounter a bug or issue.

Using this filter was so easy, I want to apply it to old family photos. I must get my Mom's blessing to scan old family photos first. That's easier said than done. Mom's very protective of them.

What's Next?

I'm going to apply the other Neural Filters to various photos to see how they work. It would be great to become familiar with what's available and try once again to restore old family photos.
