My friends believe I should get another dog.
Recently, I shared a list of excuses I make for not getting another dog. My friends decided to give me a list of reasons why I should get another dog.
In case it's helpful, below are the topics covered in this post:
Preface
After my senior dog, Shadow, died last November, life has felt partially empty. Even my small dog, Rascal, has struggled to adjust to Shadow's passing.
I want a new canine companion for myself and Rascal. I specifically want to adopt a young puppy that I can train since I have the time, patience, and space to do so. I prefer a medium or large breed dog since Rascal's already a small dog.
However, the pessimist in me could not help but come up with lame excuses for not adopting another dog, at least not any time soon. I worry that the timing is wrong for me and Rascal.
I also believe I do not deserve another dog's love. I rarely believe I am deserving of anything, really.
After learning about a free adoption event this weekend, I told my friends I could easily come up with excuses for not going. Instead, my friends texted me a list of reasons why I should go and start my search for another canine companion.
My Friends' Reasons
Below are the reasons my friends gave me for getting another dog:
Puppies.
Rascal needs a friend.
My Dad needs another buddy.
Shadow would want Rascal to have friends.
I love having a two-dog household.
I should play fetch with another dog (Rascal does not play fetch).
I need another dog as a reference to sketch and paint.
Puppy cuddles.
I can make new crafts for a new dog in a variety of sizes and styles.
I could make even more dog treats.
Another dog may be able to fit in my old clothes I no longer wear.
My couch needs to be warmed with another dog.
Rascal may be ready to teach another dog bad habits.
I get to love on and play with many different dogs as I am searching for Rascal's new friend.
Adopting a dog could be my Dad or my early birthday present.
Adoption fees are waived for this weekend's adoption event.
"YOU NEED ANOTHER PUPPERLOVE."
My friends are amazing people who care about other's happiness. I am fortunate to have them in my life.
Will I Go to the Adoption Event?
Yes. My friends and my Dad are encouraging me to start looking for another dog. I believe they know how much I miss Shadow and having two dogs to care for.
The adoption event takes place in a dealership's parking lot, so I will take Rascal with me. I want Rascal to be a part of the search if possible. I hope to sense which dogs he is interested in and which ones he chooses to avoid.
Although I am searching for a companion for myself, I want another dog to be compatible with Rascal. It is important to me that they can co-exist peacefully.
Will I adopt another dog during the event? I may do so I find a dog that seems to be the right fit for me and Rascal. I am not going to adopt a dog based on looks.
I will focus on their temperament. The dog will need to look healthy and show interest in me at least. A dog that shows interest in Rascal that Rascal does not avoid would be a plus.
I predict that Rascal will get freaked out by older barking dogs and we will leave the event upon arrival. Maybe I should not take Rascal, but he may surprise me and show interest in seeing other dogs when we get there.
I included Shadow in my search for Rascal. Together we found and picked Rascal to join our family. The three of us became the best of friends. I never second-guessed whether Shadow would get along with Rascal or not.
Worst case, I will eventually talk myself into visiting various places to meet adoptable dogs in-person on my own. If I meet a dog I am interested in, then I will arrange for it to meet with Rascal if possible. I am not in a rush to fill this void in my life.
I want to make absolutely certain that the dog I bring home will fit in beautifully with me, Rascal, and my Dad.
What's Next?
This weekend, I will attend a local adoption event. I do not know if I will find the right dog for my household. If I do, then I will introduce my new canine companion in a future blog post.
