Silly Face Masks

Customizing disposable face masks for fun.

I stored a few disposable face masks in my car's glove compartment as backups when I'm out and about. However, I decided to have some fun with customizing some silly face masks with my Posca paint markers.

The masks I decorated are paper thin, surgical-like face masks. They consist of several folds that makes the mask a good fit for any adult sized head and face. There's a metal strip along the top of the mask that bends to fit over a nose well without it sliding off easily.

Making the Masks Silly Looking

I chose to use my Posca paint markers to decorate the disposable face masks. I specifically used black, red, pink, and white colors to keep the decoration simple and quick.

I wanted to draw a smiling face on the mask. I started by drawing the shape of a large, opened mouth and tongue on the mask while the folds were still intact. I then opened the folds and filled in the gaps. I did this because I wasn't sure who'd use this mask as a backup and if the person would need to unfold the flaps at all to wear it.

Personally, I don't need to unfold the flaps of the mask to cover my face. My Dad, on the other hand, has a fathead, so he'd have to unfold the flaps of the mask to cover his face.

As I continued to draw on the mask, I decided to add a row of teeth along the top and bottom of the large, opened mouth. I filled-in the mouth with black, the tongue with red, and the teeth with white Posca paint marker colors.

To make the masks a bit sillier, I added pink round circles towards the top corners of the mouth.

There was a little bleed through to the inside of the mask. Fortunately, it didn't impede my ability to breath when I wore it.

My Thoughts

I decorated several disposable face masks as a fun arts and crafts project. However, the few times I wore one of these, someone would laugh.

I recalled visiting my local Walmart wearing one of these masks I decorated. As I was walking out the store's greeter turned around, saw me, and broke out laughing. She thanked me for making her laugh and wished me a great day.

The first time my Dad wore one of these masks, he headed into Domino's to pick-up an order. When he returned to the car, he said all employees broke out laughing or giggling at the silliness of his mask.

The way I see it, a silly mask is a great way to make strangers laugh and help them forget about any stresses for a moment in time.
