Small Batch of Pumpkin and Peanut Butter Dog Treats

Makes approximately twenty nugget-shaped soft treats.

I made a small batch of pumpkin and peanut butter nugget-shaped dog treats for my small chihuahua mix. They are not solid and hard, but rather fluffy and easy to bite into. Since he loves them, maybe your dog may love this recipe, too.

In case it's helpful, below are the topics covered in this post:

Ingredients

Ingredients and Supplies

Below are the four ingredients I used to make a small batch of pumpkin and peanut butter dog treats:

  1. 1 cup flour

  2. 1/3 cup of pure pumpkin

  3. 1 tablespoon of peanut butter

  4. 1/2 of a large egg (or 1 whole small egg)

A few notes about the ingredients:

  • DO NOT use bleached flour.

  • Use 100% pure pumpkin. DO NOT use pumpkin pie mix or spice.

  • Use peanut butter that does not include Xylitol as an ingredient. Xylitol is harmful to dogs.

  • You can use two tablespoons of peanut butter if your dog prefers. My dog does not like too much peanut butter (it is weird, I know), so I only used a small amount for this small batch recipe.

  • See the next section to learn how to measure half an egg.

How to Measure Half an Egg

Whisked Egg
Whisked Egg

Below are steps you can take to measure half an egg (approximately two tablespoons):

  1. Crack an egg into a bowl.

  2. Whisk to combine the yolk with the white completely.

  3. Separate approximately two tablespoons of the egg mixture.

If you are daring like me, you could also trust your eyes to divide the egg mixture equally. It will not ruin the recipe if you accidentally use a tad bit more than two tablespoons.

Eggs are a good protein source for dogs. You can mix the left over egg mixture into your dog's next meal.

Instructions

Below are the steps to make the dog treats:

  1. Mix the pumpkin, peanut butter, and egg together in a bowl until the ingredients turn into a paste-like consistency.

  2. Mix in the flour until all ingredients turn into a doughy consistency.

  3. Preheat the oven to 350°F.

  4. Line a baking pan with parchment paper.

  5. Use a spoon to scoop small balls or 'nuggets' of the doughy mix onto the lined baking pan.

  6. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 20 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown.

  7. Let the dog treats cool before serving.

A few notes about the instructions:

  • While mixing the wet and dry ingredients together, you can add a little more pumpkin and/or peanut butter if the mixture is too dry for your liking.

  • You can make approximately 20 small nugget-shaped dog treats using this recipe. If you prefer, you can make the shapes larger to make fewer dog treats.

  • The baked treats are not solid like a Milk Bone biscuit, but they are not mushy either. They maintain their shape and are easy to bite into. These may be ideal for dogs lacking some teeth.

  • If you want to eat the treats for yourself since there are no ingredients harmful to humans, consider dipping it into chocolate, caramel, coffee, tea, or other dip for additional flavoring.

  • Store any left over dog treats in a seal-able container.
