Summer "Scrap" Greeting Card

A handmade greeting card using scrap paper.

I had scrap pieces of paper from an old Hot Buy paper pack I wanted to use for a handmade greeting card. I used a hole punch to create a mosaic design. It was easy to do and looked good at the end.

Supplies and Stuff

These are the items I used to make this greeting card:

  • Heavy cardstock paper

  • Scrap paper

  • Square hole punch

  • Glue

  • Scissors

  • Double-sided foam tape

  • Clear stamp sentiment "hello"

  • Acrylic stamp block

  • Black archival stamp ink

I had cardstock paper that was previously cut down to 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" and scored at 4-1/4". I've found it convenient to have pre-cut and pre-scored cardstock pieces ready to use.

Hole Punching and Layout

Square Hole Punch

I used a square hole punch to cut out pieces from scrap paper I stored loosely in my Tropic Vacation Hot Buy paper pack. I ended up punching more squared than I needed.

I played around with the layout of square pieces. After a short while, I decided on a mosaic frame with space in the center for a stamped sentiment.

Assembling the Card Front Design

Once I came up with a layout I liked, I glued the pieces to the back of scrap paper (white background). I did so because I wanted straight edges to help me align the square pieces well.

I used glue because it gave me some time to make minor adjustments to the layout. I often slid the square pieces to get the edges to line up with one another.

I laid a heavy book over the glued square pieces for about a half hour to keep everything flat. Once dried, I cut off the excess scrap paper along the outer edges of the mosaic design.

Stamped "Hello" Sentiment

I thought about handwriting the sentiment in the center of the mosaic design, but I instead opted to stamp a clear "hello" stamp sentiment with an acrylic block and black archival stamp ink.

Cutting Foam Tape

I used double-sided foam tape to adhere the mosaic design to the card front. I hoped the foam tape added some depth and dimension to an otherwise simple greeting card.

My Thoughts

This was a simple way to create a handmade greeting card with scrap paper. However, it did take time to punch and glue the square pieces that made up the mosaic design.

I've always been hesitant to discard scrap pieces because it seemed like a waste. I'm glad there are ways to use scrap paper to create unique designs.

What's Next?

I recently got a new [to me] action camera that I used to record the making of this greeting card. I'll share my unboxing and app setup experience with you next week.
