Video Games Calming My Mind

Temporary escape from reality.

Because of a few emotionally stressful years, I found myself playing a few types of games to temporarily escape from reality and calm my mind.

In case it's helpful, below are the topics covered in this post:

Hidden Objects' Games

When I want to play something that does not require much brain power, I start up a hidden objects video game.

My eyes do most of the work to solve a level and find the objects the game wants me to find. All of the hidden objects' games I play include a cheat of some sort to help me find objects my eyes refuse to spot.

While I mentioned that such games do not require much of my brain power, they do require my attention. Focusing on the task at hand, like finding the many cats in A Tower Full of Cats, distracts me from thinking about the real world.

The background music, like the calming instrumentals in the FIND ALL game series, calms my mind as I mindlessly stare at a screen to find specific objects hidden in a busy hand drawn scene.

I can spend hours playing a hidden objects game or a few dedicated minutes as a short break from whatever.

Cozy Puzzle Games

Cozy puzzle video games are great when I am mentally willing to put in a tad more thought and effort into a game, but not enough to easily become frustrated when I am unable to solve something.

In fact, I tend to enjoy organization puzzle games. The sound effects of putting an object in its proper place, like when I am solving a level in A Little to the Left, are pleasant to hear.

Simulation Games

Simulation video games are my go-to when I do not want to play something as simple as cozy puzzle or hidden objects' games.

While I love management simulation games like those offered by Two Point Studios or Frontier Developments, I sometimes let the pressure of successfully managing a hospital, university campus, theme park, or zoo get to me. (I have a bad habit of spending too much money, taking out too many loans, and going into debt.)

When I am trying to avoid adding to my emotional stress, I prefer more casual simulation games that allow me to do what I want at my own pace.

For example, House Flipper 2 allows me to complete home improvement tasks through story mode or go rogue by flipping a house I own any way I want to. In the original House Flipper, I could have a furry friend from the Pets DLC accompany me in-game.

SuchArt! allows me to express my creativity by taking on art commissions or doing my own thing as I please. I can paint on canvas, figurines, furniture, floors, doors, walls, or whatever I have available in my outer space art studio.

What's Next?

I am going to dedicate a few minutes to playing a relaxing video game before I continue completing chores. Maybe I will stalk Stitch, my favorite Disney character, in Disney Dreamlight Valley or duplicate donuts on the copy machine in Job Simulator.
