What is the Best Way to Eat Potatoes?

Sharing a fun discussion my friends and I had recently.

A friend's random question about potatoes resulted in a fun and bizarre group chat conversation that I wanted to revisit in writing.

In case it's helpful, below are the topics covered in this post:

The Question

My friends and I communicate regularly via group text. We tell stories about our day, share images and video links, vent about adulting, and discuss random topics. I try to be the goofy one to make my friends smile, although it will not surprise me if I actually irritate them with my absurdness.

One day, my friend, Belle, asked, "What is the best way to eat potatoes." Being the smart aleck that I am, I answered, "With your mouth." Looking back at that reply, I should have said with utensils. Eating with only one's mouth could be messy.

She rephrased her question and asked, "What form of potatoes is the best way? Such as fries, hashbrown, mashed..."

I thought about the question seriously at first, but realized I did not have a favorite way to eat potatoes. Rather, I ate potatoes depending on my mood, my cooking ability, and/or where I am getting food from if I am not cooking at home. For example, I typically eat fries when I am on the road because it is easy and clean to eat while I drive.

I replied with what I believed was a quick goofy response to her question by sharing under what mood or condition I would eat potatoes a certain way. Again, I was being a smart aleck by providing an absurd answer to make my friends smile.

She replied stating that I supported her side of an argument with her boyfriend because she believed that "you can eat potatoes based on mood."

I was grateful to unknowingly help my friend prove her point to her boyfriend. I am my friends' biggest fan and cheerleader! But it got me thinking more about the answer I gave her.

My Absurd Answer

Below were the absurd points I gave (plus a few things I thought of after our chat) in answer to my friend's question, "What form of potatoes is the best way?"

  • Fries when I am in a rush, on the road, or lazy.

  • Hashbrowns in the morning.

  • Tots when I want hashbrown any other time of the day.

  • Mashed or scalloped when I am pretending to eat sophisticatedly.

  • Sautéed when it is prepared by someone other than me (typically in the form of a frozen meal because I do not sauté).

  • Crispy chips when I just want a snack.

  • Potato salad when I am lying to myself that it is the healthy side paired with barbeque.

  • Baked when I am lazy at home.

I am likely excluding other ways to eat potatoes because they never came to mind at the time of writing.

Loaded or Not?

After my friend, Redd, stated that she likes tater tots and fried hashbrowns, Belle asked if she liked toppings. Redd said she likes loaded fries and tots.

Like my friends, I like toppings added to my potatoes, but not all the time. For example, if I am eating while driving, I prefer plain fries or tots. I do not worry about making a mess if I accidentally dropped a piece on myself or the seat.

If I am going to be sitting at a table to eat my potatoes, then there are times I do not mind loading my potatoes with the fixings. Loaded mashed potatoes would be my favorite loaded way to eat potatoes.

Otherwise, I prefer my potatoes with little added to them. A dip of sorts or melted cheese on top is good enough for me, provided that I am not driving while consuming the potato goodness.

What's Next?

Writing about potatoes has me craving potatoes. I will probably have potato chips to snack on later today. If you like potatoes, consider including it in your next meal or snack break!
