Reminiscing on a groovy office activity.

While working at a fast paced, labor-intensive job that often resulted in low employee morale, one colleague encouraged thirty-second dance parties to boost our moods.

In case it's helpful, below are the main points covered in this post:

  • 30-Second Dance Parties

30-Second Dance Parties

One of the departments I worked for in the 2010's was frequently inundated with projects that needed to be completed with challenging deadlines. It was stressful for project leaders, like me, to manage twenty or more simultaneous projects and team members.

Whenever possible, we walked the campus grounds as a group, had potluck lunches, and pulled harmless pranks on one another. An office decor vacation prank was a fun experience my colleagues pulled on me.

We attempted to do the walks, potlucks, and pranks as it boosted employee morale and helped us build a strong workplace relationship. Unfortunately, our workload primarily kept us at our desks and on our computers. It was not uncommon for project leaders to work through breaks, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

One colleague who put in the extra effort to boost morale started encouraging us to participate in thirty-second dance parties twice a day. She would enter a room yelling "thirty-second dance party" and playing thirty-seconds of an upbeat song before moving on to the next room.

Those that never participated still enjoyed the dance parties. They sometimes teased the rest of our dancing skills, especially if we just swayed in our seats. The dance parties felt like a goofy waste of time, but it always left a lot of us smiling.

For short periods each day, we were distracted from the stress and responsibility of work with fun, goofy dancing. It is one of my favorite memories from when I worked in this department.

I will always cherish memories of my colleagues and our activities (walks, potlucks, pranks, and dance parties) from that department.

What's Next?

While I do not participate in thirty-second dance parties in the workplace, I always dedicate some time to dance with my dogs. I highly recommend dancing to boost your mood today!
